Argentina: Internet Freedom, Cybersecurity, Digital Rights and Cyber-Diplomacy Project

Introduction

While the rampant progress of technology is changing our lives for the better, it does not come without serious and far-reaching problems. Cybersecurity, digital rights and ownership, internet freedom and cyber-diplomacy have all emerged as new areas to be confronted and overcome not just by Governments and business, but by society as a whole. This internship offers a fascinating opportunity to explore these issues but with a focus on research and critical thinking. Our established internship program encourages a series of initiatives and projects that supports a series of research initiatives and advocacy projects aimed at critically examining how technology affects society, with a focus on safeguarding human rights, promoting transparency, and challenging undemocratic uses of digital power

During your remote experience in Argentina, you’ll learn how to explore today’s challenging technologies while promoting policies that protect the public amid ever-increasing digital threats. Further, you’ll work with professionals to exchange and then develop ideas to promote digital training and cyber-diplomacy that represents and protects society. The entirety of the program will give you the opportunity to put the skills you’ve been learning in the classroom into practice, as well as introduce you to team-building and problem-solving skills.

Remote internship daily life

Your remote internship will be conducted from host organisation’s offices in Palermo, Buenos Aires. You’ll get to undertake some remote work and have the possibility of attending online technology-related events.

The program is designed to fit around you, under the direction of an English-speaking coordinator and to best take advantage of your owns skills and interests, as well as the skills you’d like to develop further.

A weekly or monthly agenda is agreed depending on your and the NGO needs, and your progress is evaluated at weekly mentoring and coaching sessions.

Here are just some of the things you might find yourself doing:

• Attending online technology and social development events
• Research and analysis of reports relating to  technology
• Execution of awareness, policy or educational campaigns
• Events and workshop assistance
• Legal cases study
• Communications assistance
• Assistance in translation and English training (if applicable)
• Development of projects in different areas of the NGO

If you’d like to know more about areas of work on this technology and cybercrime internship, here are some examples of projects that are either ongoing or have been completed recently within the organization:

• Artificial Intelligence. We explore how AI is shaping societies—especially in terms of governance, surveillance, and digital rights. Our research critically examines how emerging technologies can both enable and restrict freedoms, particularly in contexts where algorithmic systems affect public discourse and civil liberties. Interns will engage with case studies, policy analysis, and multilateral discussions around the ethical development and deployment of AI.
• Religious Freedom and Freedom of Speech. We advocate for the protection of freedom of belief and expression as foundational human rights. Our work critiques how governments and tech platforms regulate religious speech and dissenting voices, and we examine global trends that may threaten these freedoms. Interns contribute to research that analyzes censorship, blasphemy laws, and digital persecution in various regions..
• Global Digital and UN Governance: We actively follow and engage in the ongoing international debates around the United Nations’ Global Digital Compactand broader digital governance frameworks. Our work emphasizes monitoring how digital rights, accountability, and power structures are being shaped in these discussions. Interns contribute by tracking developments, analyzing policy proposals, and participating in global online consultations with a focus on ensuring inclusive and rights-based outcomes.
• Digital Currencies: We examine the geopolitical and societal implications of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and other forms of state-backed or private digital money. Our research critically assesses how these technologies may affect privacy, financial autonomy, and global economic power dynamics. Interns will analyze developments in digital currency governance and contribute to discussions around financial freedom, surveillance, and inequality.

Requirements

• Minimum age 18.
• Good command of English, Spanish skills are a bonus but not required. Our staff speak English, French, Spanish.
• Minimum commitment of 4 weeks, maximum 2 months.
• Minimum 6 hours per week

The internship program is open to students or graduates of careers related but not exclusive to Social Sciences, Law, International relations, Sociology, Political Sciences, Journalism, Arts, Communication, Computing, Engineering, Economics among others.
